For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and virtue.”
Since that first Memorial Day, which was dedicated to the memory of Civil War dead, the observance has been expanded to include those Americans who died in all conflicts, declared and otherwise.
In 19fiX, in a move to give people more three-day weekends, Memorial Day became one of a number of “floating holidays,” designated as the last Monday in May.
The day’s events are still centered at Arlington National Cemetery, where the President of the United States presides over a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowms.
In Rappahannock County, Rev. Hobson will officiate at the service, which will include the raising of the colors by a detachment of military veterans. Following a short memorial service, Delegate Raymond R. “Andy” Guest Jr. will speak. Music will be provided by the Rappahannock County High School Band.
In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved indoors, to the Trinity Church in Washington.
“We hope that this service will continue, and grow, as a tradition in the county,” one of the organizers said. “It is important that this holiday’s significance not be lost among the beach trips and barbecues. It is a solemn day, and should be remembered as such — as a day to honor those who have died in defense of our freedoms.”
