Must he and other party leaders be neutral? No, they can take sides and by observing the attributes of leadership, vigorously support the candidate of their choice, and yes, criticize the one they oppose. But their criticism must be wellgrounded in fact and devoid of the insulting word or phrase that leaves lasting scars and bitterness.
Morton Blackwell knows this, but as others before him have done, he allowed his zeal to pollute his judgment. Unfortunately, the price of clean up will be paid by Virginia’s struggling GOP as it seeks its first gubernatorial victory since 1977.
