Beginning June 1, senior citizens who are residential customers of Central Telephone Company of Virginia (Centel) may receive a ten percent discount on their basic local telephone service, thanks to the Centel Senior Citizens Discount Plan.
In approving the plan this week, the Virginia State Corporation Commission termed it “meritorious” and said that it would benefit the public interest.
The SCDP, believed to be one of the first plans of its kind to be offered in the United States by a local telephone company, will enable Centel residential customers who are 65 years of age or older to receive a 1U percent discount on their basic residential access line rates.
“We're delighted that the State Corporation Commission shares our belief that we must keep local telephone rates as affordable as we possibly can for our senior citizens,” said Tom Brown, Centel-Virginia/North Carolina vice-president.
Mr. Brown noted that for many of the customers who will be eligible under the plan, the telephone is a necessary lifeline.
