For many people. Memorial Day weekend brings visions of the beginning of summer, and a long, leisurely three-day weekend.
For Sperryville merchants and residents, however, the weekend has become Spring Festival time, the occasion of the town’s celebration of spring in the mountains. This year, the tradition continues, as the event kicks off on Saturday at 10 a.m., continuing on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The town is gearing up for the thousands of tourists expected to jam the little town at the crossroads of Routes 211 and 522 at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. And, although extended forecasts from the National Weather Service are not 100 percent accurate, sunny, summery weather is expected to grace Rappahannock County on Saturday and Sunday.
The town is prepared, according to the festival’s organizers. Tom Junk, president of the Sperryville Business Council, which sponsors the event, said that the council expects “a laidback celebration with lots of people.” As usual, it will be held rain or shine, but, he added, “We’re sure that the weather will cooperate.”
