The supervisors decided to reconsider their earlier decision to cut building a dog'pound from the new budget. “I think we should go ahead and do it,” Mr. Massie said.
“Can you hold off until next spring?” Mr. Estes asked.
The board voted to go into executive session to discuss Mr. McCarthy’s salary. When they returned to open session, Mr. Gilkey announced that they had decided to give Mr. McCarthy a 10 percent raise to $35,200, “but you can forget about the planner for another year. We all feel you are worth the money.”
Mr. McCarthy thanked them for the money and their confidence. “To be quite frank, I as a new property owner think if you move the rate from 75 cents to 72 cents, you’re still going to have the public mad at you.
“There was a decision to use the general fund surplus to build the landfill. Now you have to build it back. You never know what is going to pop up while you are building it back to five percent. The first payment on the high school addition comes due this year. There are four cents right there. There have been school increases and other increases. I think you are right to deal with it now, and face the public now," the county administrator suggested.
“But we still want to hear what the public has to say,” Mr. Massie said.
Mr. Estes made the motion to advertise a tax rate of 75 cents, which pas.-ed by a unanimous vote.
“1 have been over this thing with a fine tooth comb, and it's a 48 percent increase,” Mr. Massie said.
The board also approved a resolution to authorize County Treasurer Frances Foster to borrow up to $100,000 to get through the rest of the fiscal year which ends June 30.
