which put 8,834 acres into the program. Of the estimated 606,300 erodible acres in Virginia, the program has enrolled nearly 60,000, with 37 percent being in trees.
What makes the conservation reserve program attractive is that farmers get annual rental payments for 10 years for taking the land out of production, and they get cost-share payments of up to 50 percent to help establish a permanent cover crop.
Nationally, the program was designed to take 40 million to 45 million acres of highly erodible land out of crop production by 1990. Just over 28 million acres have been accepted.
