Law enforcement agencies across Northern Virginia are searching for two young men who escaped from the Rappahannock County Jail Tuesday evening.
According to Sheriff John Henry Woodward, James Preston "Dickie" Walters. 2(>. and Robert Wayne Wynkoop, 20. were discovered missing from the jail about 7:40 p.m. The two had apparently created a small hole in the chain-link fence surrounding the exercise yard and slithered underneath it.
Sheriff Woodward said that Walters and Wynkoop were inside the jail's main cellblock. but had apparently jimmied the door leading into the exercise yard so it could be opened without a key.
While the jailer was in the davroom supervising a group meeting. W alters and Wynkoop slipped away.
The remaining inmates in the jail were locked down Tuesday evening as a precaution Sheriff Woodward said. However, he added, there was no indication that any of the other inmates participated in the escape.
"1 don't consider either of them dangerous," the sheriff said, adding that both are in jail for crimes against property, not violence.
Walters is serving time for a conviction of distribution of marijuana in Warren County, and is awaiting trial for-the burglary of five homes in the Huntly and Flint Hill area. He faces five charges of breaking and entering, three petty larcenies and two grand larceny charges in connection with those incidents.
Wynkoop is serving 24 months for two felony convictions of breaking, and entering and grand larceny in connection with the burglary of a home outside Sperryville.
