Textbook fees

will increase

Parents will be paying more to rent elementary school textbooks this coming school year, but the fees for most high school books will remain at $4 per book.

At the elementary school, book fees were raised from $27 per year to $29 for students in kindergarten through third grade and from $97 to $39 for those in fourth through seventh grade.

While there is no increase in the basic book fee for high school students, there will be new workbooks that must be purchased for laboratory science courses ranging in price from $6 to $K.50. Also the cost of gym shorts and some business course books which must be purchased has been increased.

Lunch prices will remain the same at $1 for high schoolers and $.90 for elementary school students.

Those going on the seventh-grade trip to Williamsburg, also will be paying more; the price per student will be raised from $55 to $65. This pays only part of the cost of the trip, which is also supported by numerous fund raisers and by a direct School Board contribution.

These fees were set at the School Board’s regular July meeting last Tuesday. At that meeting the School Board also interviewed two candidates for assistant principal/athletic director at the high school and appointed K. David Smith:

Mr. Smith comes to Rappahannock County from Craig County where he was principal at McCleary Elementary this past year. He also has secondary school experience, having served as assistant principal at Manassas Park High School and at Osborne High School in the Manassas area.
