one change be made, to provide for the areas around the town which have a zoning category denser than one dwelling per five acres. He proposed wording to the effect that a lot could be created, providing that in no cases the current zoning density be exceeded.
Stonewall-Hawthom District Supervisor Robert Anderson suggested that the plan be presented to the two jurisdictions' planning commissions for comments.
Mr. McCarthy said he would pass the plan on to Town Attorney Frank Reynolds for comment as well. He added that he preferred, if possible, to handle the proposal as a memorandum of understanding between the two jurisdictions rather than a formal ordinance amendment. “In any case,” he added, “we will go through a public hearing.
“I’ve been looking at this for so long I couldn’t see the forest for the trees,” the county administrator told Mr. Willis. “I wish we could have done this about two months ago."
Town Council member Ray Gooch, who also attended the meeting, said he found the cooperation between the town and county refreshing. He suggested that thought be given to a permanent committee of county and town officials to work out mutual concerns.
He told Mr. Massie that his suggestion for sharing members between the county and town planning commissions is a good idea, and said he supports a change in the town’s ordinances, if necessary, to allow it.
And for Mr. Smoot, who attended the meeting, a solution to his problem may be in sight. “The best aspect to this solution,” Mr. McCarthy said, “is that no matter where the line goes it will hopefully address the problem.”
