To the editor:
I’m very thankful that in a democracy we can voice our opinions, but with that privilege also comes the responsibility of mutual respect for the opinions of others. My motive, voiced the other evening at the CATV public hearing, was to protect innocent children from viewing sexually confusing material on channels that profit from obscenity.
Our constitution does not protect obscenity, in fact it is illegal in Virginia to sell or distribute obscenities. It is our legal right in Virginia to form a community standard that could protect our citizens from exposure to obscene viewing. Peter Luke, our Commonwealth’s Attorney, read these facts at the public hearing, and assured the county’s Supervisors that they could draw up an ordinance that would incorporate the community standards.
Last week I contacted Wilderness Satellite TV Corporation to get the facts on potentially harmful TV channels. They told me there are three sex channels: Playboy, Xcstacy and Pay Per View. The Playboy Channel plays mainly NR movies. He explained that NR means no rating available. He con*iJiued that most anything can be seen on these movies because they slipped through the legal rating system.
The Xcstacy channel, on the other hand, contains all X to XXX movies. I was informed that these movies contained all types of sexual encounters including lesbianism, violent sex, and every type of perversion, imaginable.
