that type of viewing coming in contact with our youth. These channels are operated soley to profit off obscene material with no thought of how it could dramatically ruin a child who views the material and would accept perversion as the norm. Our county will be sending a mixed message if we pass a cable TV ordinance that allows these channels, and then teaches our children mutual respect for the sexes through the family life curriculum.
On the topic of censorship, Americans have lived with censorship ever since Hollywood began making movies. We have a publicly accepted and legally binding motion picture rating. Children under 17 cannot view R movies. PG 13 keeps out and censors movies for children under 13. Censorship is not punishment, it is responsible government, protecting those citizens from viewing emotionally upsetting or psycologically disturbing material.
We are the caretakers of this generation of children. Someday we will be held responsible for our actions, if not in this world, then in the next. Liberty and freedom are extremely difficult to gain, and can be lost easily without responsible citizenship. Let’s not concentrate on entertaining ourselves, but let’s entertain thoughts and actions that will help our children become responsible citizens.
