According to Mr. Slaughter, the task force “will be looking into the precarious condition of Medicare and trends in health care insurance as they apply to government and private sector programs.” In addition, the task force will explore different approaches which emphasize quality of care, cost, and individual choice as opposed to mandated health insurance and benefits.
In his prepared comments, Rep. Slaughter said that “this year’s budget battles over how much and where to cut Medicare spending - which have become annual affairs - are a good example of the typical Congressional attitude toward Federal health policy.”
"This naiTow focus on reducing Medicare spending to cut the deficit has led Congress to ignore major reforms that the Medicare system needs immediately,” Mr. Slaughter said. “I have suggested one such reform, contained in the Health Care Savings Account Act (H.R. 1,080). By examining this and other proposals, I hope the task force will be able to suggest the fundamental changes needed by our nation's health care system.”
