The right choice
Last Wednesday’s decision by the Washington Town Council to allow the county to build an addition on the jail was, we feel, a wise decision.
And, as County Administrator John McCarthy observed, the fact that the majority of the council reached a different decision than the Architectural Review Board does not mean that the ARB was wrong. The ordinance and its standards are open to interpretation, and those charged with applying it may come to different conclusions. That was evidenced by the split vote of the ARB, with two members voting against the application and one in favor.
That’s the kind of honest disagreement which arises during consideration of matters of this sort. More such disagreements were evidenced last w eek, w hen consulting architects differed as to the appropriateness of the addition, or even whether it should be built at all.
We’re also glad that the council was able to view the application in the “new light” required by the hearing, and not fall victim to what must have been a temptation to support its board — regardless of the case presented by the other side.
