“Within the framework of Roe versus Wade, I think we need to keep government out of the most complex decision a woman may ever have to make,” Beyer stated. He went on to say that he supports state funding of abortions in cases of incest, rape, gross fetal abnormality, or when a mother’s life is at stake, but does not favor spending public money for uncomplicated basic abortions.
He considers parental consent legislation “good, obvious, and necessary” with the exception that the law should ensure that in seeking consent, the girls do not put themselves at risk of physical, sexual or emotional violence.
The candidate backs the controversial Family Life Education plan whereby the state mandates certain sex ed topics to be taught in Virginia schools. While acknowledging that some subjects should be reserved for the home, Beyer, the father of two, said society is responsible for making sure that children are educated about the facts of life.
“Family Life Education itself is a response to the fact that so much that we might have taken for granted being taught in previous generations is not being taught now,” said Beyer.
In environmental concerns, Beyer said that solid waste disposal and the contamination of Virginia water supplies are two emerging critical problems. As lieutenant governor, he would support efforts to expand recycling practices and work to implement programs to preserve the state’s groundwater supply.
Although he is considered a longshot candidate by many, Beyer insists that he will not resort to negative campaigning.
“I want this candidacy to stand for something positive about Virginia’s future,” he said.
“I’m saying,‘Here I am. I have a great deal of business experience, and let’s put that business experience to work — solving our transportation crisis, our affordable housing crisis, work on extending economic development throughout the state. ”
The Beyer campaign is working seven days a week “as many hours as we can” to familiarize Virginia with the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor.
