The potato is one of the few vegetables that originated in the Western hemisphere. Scholars believe the native home of the potato is South America.
Spanish explorers discovered the potato there and introduced it into Spain between 1550 and 1570. From Spain it traveled throughout Europe. The Irish were the first to recognize its value and it soon became the major food crop of that country.
