Answer the Census
This week, county residents are receiving packets from the Census Bureau. Most are short, and will require only a few minutes to fill out the questions about household members and the type of housing.
One of every six homes will receive a long form, containing more detailed questions, which will then be extrapolated to cover the population at large.
The census data is completely confidential, and will not be divulged by the Census Bureau to any other government agency, private business or individual. All individual responses will be compiled into statistical form, and the information released publically will not identify any particular person.
The data gathered is vital to planning by the federal, state and local government. Many programs have their funding level determined by population figures, and the Census data forms the base for those figures.
For households not answering the first Census questionaire, an enumerator will pay a personal, follow-up visit. It’s a much more expensive process than the mail-in response form.
