The Solcotrans not only relieves patients’ worries about blood, but also decreases the number of units donated prior to surgery. Blood collected through the Solcotrans is untreated other than the filters and provides better oxygen-carrying capacity than blood bank blood. The oxygen helps speed the healing process. Solcotrans blood also helps maintain patients’ fluid balance and helps avoid post-operative anemia. Using the Solcotrans to conserve an otherwise wasted resource is significantly less expensive and saves scarce banked blood for lifesaving situations when blood is needed without warning.
