To avoid problems associated with bloodborne contaminants such as AIDS and hepatitis, CMH offers the options of donating the patient’s own blood and recapturing blood lost following surgery.
During the summer prior to her surgery, Hopper and her husband made two trips from their summer place north of Ottowa, Canada, to CMH for pre-operative tests and to donate two units of her blood.
Using a new device called a solcotrans to save blood draining from her incision, another unit of blood was collected to fulfill Hopper’s need for replacement blood. The solcotrans filters blood from the wound and collects it in a 500 ml. sterile container.
A few days following surgery Hopper reflected on her experience in choosing state-of-the-art procedures and her surgeon and hospital.
"What I was advised has proved to be absolutely true," Hopper stated. “My care has been remarkable—the registrar, the nurses, the techs — all are very nice people who take time to be interested in people as individuals.”
Following a trip to Holland in the fall and a trip to Asia in the winter, Hopper planned to take her bar exam in February.
