Hank Maxey and Will Oliver know how to string fence.They can do it for 200 feet, in a perfectly straight line, and with unpar-alleled precision.
That’s right. Using crimps, knots, insulators and battens, these two Virginia Tech senior animal science majors put together one heckuva fence to win the second annual National Collegiate Fence-Building Contest in Moultrie, Georgia.
They beat defending champion, University of Florida and six other schools by scoring 389 out of a possible 425 points (200 points were awarded for timeliness of completion, 200 for quality of the fence, and 25 points for overall appearance).
As national winners, the team will represent the United States in the world competition in New Zealand this June.
Tech junior animal science major, Jimmy Wade of Greenville, served as coach during the competition. He attributes the team’s success to the experience of its members. “Both Will and Hank had done a lot of fencing at home, and I think that was the key,” he said.
Maxey, who hails from Chatham, makes money during the summers by putting up fence for others. Oliver gets plenty of practice on Eldon Farms, the 8,000 acre cattle farm in Woodville, managed by his father.
Despite their mutual years of experience, however, Maxey and Olivemever built a fence together until the competition. But they did make sure to work on a practice fence the day before the contest, and to put together a plan of action the night before.
“We made up the order and decided how we were going to do it so we could get it done in the quickest possible time,” Maxey said. “A lot of times when you’re going really fast, you forget something, and so we had a little list there to remind us.”
The contest was sponsored by more than a dozen agricultural supply and fencing operations, including Gallagher Power Fence of San AntonioTexas.
