able to sight a rifle down it,” Oliver said.
The Virginia Tech fencing team completed its 200-foot fence in a little over two hours and 15 minutes, tying one other team in the scorefor timeliness.
What really clinched it for the Hokies was the quality of their construction, said Cynthia Wood, assistant professor of animal science. “Fronfcwhat I understand, they just outstripped everyone in that category — they were in a class by themselves,” she said.
The team agreed they were careful to build the fence to conform to the judges’ specifications, but said that it won’t be so easy to do at the world competition in New Zealand.
“The competition there is quite a bit different from the one here,” Maxey explained. “What we did here — all the holes were pre-dug and we put the fence in right where they said to put it. Over there, it’s more of a rolling terrain, and they just lay your materials at one end. So it’ll be trickier — it’s more the knowledge of fencing than just the techniques of building a fence.” . It’s an “art and science” Oliver said, an acquired knowledge that’s only obtained from building fence in many different kinds of situations.
