"For advanced surgical procedures at CMH, the increased size of the operating rooms helps us a great deal, especially in orthopedic surgery which uses many large pieces of equipment—fracture table, C arm, tables of instruments,” said Dr. Ben Allen.
The additional space and the air handling system help decrease the risk of infection which is already unusually low at CMH. The air is changed twenty-four times an hour in the operating room, well above the standard of eighteen times an hour.
“With all the new technology and spacious surroundings, we still firmly believe that our mission cannot be fulfilled without our four "C’s” — Caring, Compassion. Competence, and Courtesy,” said Wayne Weaver, RN, director of the surgical suite. Giving outpatients a pleasant experience was one of the reasons for this project, and the surgical Outpatient experience is more comfortable and private with space for these patients incorporated in the surgical suite.
Outpatients use a separate entrance to a private preoperative area. Following surgery both inpatients and outpatients are taken to the post anesthesia care unit (PACU) for recovery. Outpatients then go to a post-operative area until they are ready to go home.
