That “art and science” is so respected in New Zealand that fencebuilding is a spectator sport. At the world competition, Maxey and Oliver expect to go against several Kiwi teams that build fences professionally.
“We’re going to be just a bunch of Yanks,” Oliver said.
But while fence-building isn’t quite a spectator sport here in the States, it is one of the most important aspects of modern-day American agriculture. Farmers use them to direct cattle to the right grazing area, to keep out damaging predators, and to separate their livestock from their neighbor’s.
“You can’t do without one,” says Maxey.
What the Virginia Tech fencebuilders could do without is a common misunderstanding of their craft. When most people think of fencing, they think of masks, foils, and the Three Musketeers.
“My roommate’s girlfriend, when we went to the national competition, thought we were doing the other kind of fencing,” Maxey said. “She said, ‘now is this how you do it?’ and went into an ‘en garde’ type stance.
“Of course I started laughing. I just can’t picture myself fencing that way at all.”
