Commissioner of the Revenue Beverly Atkins jokes that she is running for reelection because her deputy, Betsy Murray, won’t let her quit, but then she adds., “I enjoy my job.”
She appreciates being able to live and work in Rappahannock. “I don’t like living in cities, and I don’t like to commute,” she said. “Most of the time I enjoy the people."
Ms. Atkins, 33, is a Rappahannock native. She has been the Commissioner of Revenue since December, 1985. She had been working part-time in the office and was appointed when Merle Scoggin resigned. She was elected in 1986 and again in 1987.
Herp is an office where laughter is heard frequently, but where a lot of work is accomplished.
