“My show will be in the front room and this piece will be on the back wall," she said with pride.
After the show, the piece will return to the center.
The final project the children made with the artist is a two-foot tall statue, created in clay but casted in bronze.
“I took a poll of what was important to the children and the school,” Ms. Morris said, adding together they decided hugging, family and animals wrere important.
Thus, the figure shows two faceless characters, one standing above the other, sitting, while the one sitting cradles a rabbit.
“It was what the children wanted,” Ms. Morris said, adding “they did the work on this piece. I smoothed some of the rough spots but they really did the work.”
“They really enjoyed the work,” she said, adding several times when the activity was over the children would want to continue the artwork, not wanting to run or play at the swings.
“The final casting will be displayed at the school,” the artist said, adding the mold will be kept if anyone is interested in buying another for themselves.
Ms. Morris continues her artistin-residence position until the first week of August.
From there, she begins her work with children at Camp Fanstastic in Front Royal at the 4-H Education Center.
