4-H reps attend
first Congress
Amissville’s Jerri Mallory, 13, and her mother Linda were the first Rappahannock 4-H representatives to 4-H Intermediate Congress in Harrisonburg July 18-21.
“I don’t think anyone from this county has ever gone before,” extension agent, home ecomnomics, Helen Smith said, explaining the three day congress at Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg is patterened after 4-H Congress attended by teens though competition is not part of the program.
“This year the workshops and programs are centered around an international theme," Mrs. Smith said, adding each year the congress takes on a new theme.
“The World Around Me” features workshops on international culture, foods from around the world, music from various nations, and international exhibits and Speakers.
“This is an educational program for intermediate age groups,” Mrs. Smith said, explaining the workshops or activities help to build a student’s self-esteem, make friends not just from another culture but from other parts of the state, build confidence and educate.
“The congress objective is to expand the vision of 4-H opportunties,” she said.
4-H Intermediate Congress is for students 11 to 13 years in age.
