Mr. Slaughter III termed the foreign policy efforts made by the Bush Administration “a superb job,” and although he is “encouraged” by warming relations with the Soviets, he would not pour money into their economy.
“I think America has regained confidence as an economic power in the world, and I am satisfied that under the president’s guidance we will do the things we need to do to keep America competitive,” he said.
Mr. Allen called for a “realistic” approach to foreign policy, especially when dealing with tyrants.
He would be more conservative with aid to other countries and would force the Soviets to cut their own defense and their aid to Cuba before asking the United States to rescue their economy.
Ms. Slaughter said in the area of foreign policy she would solicit input from 7th District constituents.
One area she finds “very encouraging” is the conversion to democracy by Eastern European countries.
“Democracy really works and free enterprise really works,” she said.
