The Fauquier Republican Committee endorsed Robert Darby as its candidate for the House of Delegates in the 31st District and re-endorsed a number of other Fauquier Republicans at its meeting July 31.
French Slaughter III, a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from the 7th District and the son of the retiring incumbent Rep. D. French Slaughter Jr., R-Va., spoke at the meeting in the Warren Green Building. He said, “I would be standing in front of you today if my name were not French Slaughter.”
Mr. Darby and incumbent Fauquier Treasurer Bitsy Lineweaver were the only Republican hopefuls without the GOP’s endorsement until the meeting. Fauquier GOP Committee Chairman Betty Quigley said that Mr. Darby, from Rappahannock, who faces Fauquier Democrat Jerry Wood, had called her to “request I get you all to reconsider” a previous decision to leave any endorsement in that race until the Mass Meeting, Aug. 31.
The committee voted 14-6 to back Mr. Darby and was unanimous in endorsing Ms. Lineweaver. Mrs. Quigley said it did not matter that the vote on Darby was less than unanimous since it was a majority. The committee then reendorsed all its candidates in a blanket motion.
