Mr. Allen said he was working on the drug problem “before it became fashionable,” introducing anti-drug legislation back in 1976. He is a member of the General Assembly’s Courts of Justice and General Laws committees. He has worked to increase the amount of information that juries in Virginia are given on a defendant’s criminal history.
In general, Mr. Allen said, he has ‘a solid law enforcement record,” including endorsements by the sheriffs n his General Assembly district.
In a split along ideological lines, the three conservatives all favor Judge Clarence Thomas’ nomination, while Ms. Slaughter does not.
She said his qualifications “are not of the caliber to be appointed to the Supreme Court. ”
All four candidates are opposed to any kind of government quota.
All four also support a Constitutional amendment to force the federal government to balance the budget.
Mr. Slaughter III would go further, instituting a “flexible freeze” on government programs “to tie spending down.”
