Why are Virginia Baptists helping build churches in New England? Judge Snead, an organizer of the trip, is coordinator for the VirginiaNew England Baptist Partnership.
He explained that during the World War II era many soldiers from the South were looking for Baptist churches in New England, but couldn’t find any. At that time an effort to start Baptist churches in that region was begun. The effort is still building, from less than 100 Baptist churches in 1983 to over 150 in New England today.
The new 2,000-square-foot Lake Sunapee Baptist Church, housing a sanctuary, four Sunday school rooms, and fellowship hall, should meet the needs of the church for a while.
But meantime, members of the Washington Baptist team headed home through the beautiful hills of New Hampshire and back to their regular jobs of data communications programmer, plumber, real estate agent, pastor, teacher, homemaker and retired judge.
They had grown closer to a new church family and were leaving behind a rapidly progressing church building built on faith, with money and muscle power contributed by many.
