Rappahannock County horses, beef cattle, sheep and goats can welcome a new doctor to their sick beds, Flint Hill veterinarian Todd Burdick.
While his practice is new to Rappahannock, his name and face may be familiar to many.
Bom in upstate New York, Dr. Burdick attented Cornell University for undergraduate work receiving his doctorate in veterinarian medicine from Virginia Tech.
After a period of time in Florida, he worked in Warrenton before taking a position as state veterinarian for West Virginia. He has lived in Rappahannock County for three years.
He began his practice here in June, operating from his home, Skyview Farm, and from his truck which has been converted into a mobile infirmary.
He plans to specialize in large animals, horses, sheep, goats, and beef cattle.
“We will use the library at home as a supply area but most of the work will be with large animals so the practice is pretty easily mobile,” he said, between calls from local livestock owners.
While Dr. Burdick plans office hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MondayFriday, he also understands the need for emergency services and plans to respond around the clock.
“Anyone can leave a message on my telephone machine,” he said, explaining the emergency number, 1800-388-3470, is answered by a service and contacts his pager immediately. Other service calls should be directed to 675-3149.
“I will try to work with others schedules,” he said, adding veterinarian hours are like a doctors, nights and weekends are necessary.
Until mid-August, Dr. Burdick is only part-time in the county, as he presently is finishing his position as state veterinarian in West Virginia, working at the Charleston Race Track.
