It’s a rare politician who does not go door-to-door before an election, asking constituents for their support.
It’s an even rarer politician, however, who goes door-to-door a fter an election, thanking constituents for their support.
Jay Katzen is that rarity. Since his victory over incumbent Jerry Wood for the 31st District House of Delegates seat, Katzen has split time between Richmond and the precincts in Fauquier, Rappahannock and Warren counties, slapping backs, offering thanks to# people whether they voted for hinror not, and reaffirming his enthusiasm to be serving them.
Katzen is, without doubt, a bom campaigner. If you are walking somewhere in a hurry, bringing him along is a bad idea. He feels a compelling need to catch every eye, to shake every hand, to greet every passerby.
His sense of public service is almost unsettling; he is as quick to discuss an issue with you as he is to offer to pick your kids up from school.
But if Katzen has a little trouble snapping out of campaign mode, it’s understandable. After announcing his candidacy on Dec. 1992, he launched a campaign offensive in which he says he knocked on more than 14,000 doors. He left Jerry Wood, who started later and adopted a more leisurely pace, in the dust.
