It might have been July 4th, except it was Oct. 4 and I was in Moscow.

On Sunday, the day after my encounters with the nationalists, a pitched battle had been fought around my appropriately named Belgrade Hotel. In the late afternoon, thousands of supporters of Alexander Rutskoi and the Parliamentary rump had come armed into the streets. That same night, a bloody attack had been launched on the Moscow TV station causing a temporary news blackout for those without CNN.

Unfortunately, I was visting a friends in another part of Moscow for a late lunch that afternoon. He had virtually forced me to stay put when news of the violence was announced by telephoning friends. I wanted to returned to the Belgrade where I had, from my 17th floor perch, a front row seat on one of the main battle fronts along the Garden Ring and Smolensky Square. Under great pressure from Boris and his wife, I reluctantly followed their pfudent advice and stayed the night with them.

Monday morning I impatiently drove back to my hotel, though Boris was still nervous about my braving the streets. We heard gunfire crackling in the direction I was to go, but I figured as long as Anatoly w'as willing to take me, it couldn’t be that dangerous. He had a familv too.
