The off-again-on-again of my DAY BY DAY efforts according to the whimsy of the Editor de Jour has made me a very cinical critic of the weekley Rappahannock News product. When the whimsy did suit to print there was always the threat usually realized wherein the piece was changed and/or shortened. When queried the ususal reason was that there was insufficient room. I was always offended by this because I could usually compare my items to others in the publication which were grossly uninteresting. A good example was usually found under the heading “30 Years Ago.” The item had not been interesting when originially printed much less currently. When I question the management about why they would waste space on such idiocy the reply was the classic, “We have always done it that way!”
I present the following as a good example of typical past events that you might find more exciting.
ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGE August 1893
The 17 YEAR year locust made a record appearance. The Government proposed that the locust be used as food. Processing by frying in olive oil, added salt and hot pepper. Those who tried the edible locust reported it very tasty. Nutrition experts stated that it had great nutriennt values.
