Although Camp Happy Land run by the Salvation Army is not a Piedmont United Way agency, three Rappahannock youngsters were able to attend the residential camp free thanks to the United Way.
Last spring Marie Davis, who works for the lccal Social Services Department knew of the three children who would benefit from a week at camp but could not afford it. She contacted the Piedmont United Way to see if they could help, and the United Way came through with funds so the children could have a week at camp.
Services for Abused Families is a United Way agency that does directly benefit Rappahannock citizens. This organization, generally known as SAFE, provides shelter, food, clothing and many other Services to women and their children who setek a haven away from an abusing spouse.
According to Lous Smith, services coordinator for SAFE, the agency served 18 to 20 Rappahannock women and their children last year. The agency provides referrals for legal advice, couselling even medical treatment for those needing these services.
