Ms. Anna Lewis Allsberry from Hopewell Baptist Church in Sperryville spoke next. Her family has maintained the history of the church for 121 years. Ms. Allsberry is licensed as a minister.
The church was organized in 1873 by 12 people who were members of the Sperryville Baptist Church, which is now Reynolds Baptist. The Rev. John Gaines was the first pastor, and the church was bought for $2,200. The cornerstone was laid in 1922.
At one time the church was rented out to the Piedmont school board for two years and classes were held there.
Veda Timbers, the Clerk of Macedonia Baptist Church in Flint Hill, spoke next. She said that Macedonia means “extended” or “reaching out”. The church was organized in 1866, and the first pastor was Rev. Homer. He remained as pastor there for 36 years.
The present pastor at Macedonia is Rev. Price, and he is (he fourth to be at Macedonia for the 128 years of the church’s existence. Mrs. Timbers said, “There is a vitality that makes Macedonia stand out. ”
Col. Samuel Glasker spoke about his church, Shiloh Baptist Church of Woodville. He said that Shiloh means “peace, calm and compassion.”
Shiloh was organized in 1873 by a Baptist council with Rev. Homer. The structure which now stands was built in 1905. \ Col. Glasker said, “Christianity remained with blacks throughout slavery. The black church became an institution of values, justice, and social family gatherings.”
Shiloh meets on the first and third Sundays of each month, and has had 14 pastors.
