Captain Jeff Brown of the Rappahannock Sheriff’s Department was the officer called to the scene of the fire at about 2:30 a.m. on the morning of July 28. He testified that hay bales about 40 feet from the road were on fire when he arrived. He said he noticed the wooden crate in the southbound lane of U.S. 522, and picked it up.
Capt. Brown ran the license number which Mrs. Blosser had given him, and found that it was missing one letter. With an “F” in front of the numbers Mrs. Blosser had given him the license could be matched to a truck belonging to Mr. Clem’s father.
Capt. Brown paid a visit to the address in Linden which matched the license number at about 7 a.m. on the same morning. He read Mi
