Russia is on a delicate knife’s edge in its struggle for a new identity. History, conditions and individual’s decisions will determine the outcome. Only a pragmatic, undogmatic western approach that is humble about the limits of its knowledge and respectful of the views of those who must live with the consequences of wrong decisions is appropriate under current circumstances.
