I was going to run for candidate from Leningrad to the Supre- le Soviet, back under Gorbachev. It was fashionable for all ‘good democrats’ to be against the Finnish dam project. Everyone had to be against it, even if they knew nothing about it. It was not ‘democratic’ to question its badness.
