Mr. Gulick then presented his closing argument. He said, “The question that needs to be asked today is ’Has the commonwealth proved beyond a reasonable doubt that that man set fire to those hay bales?” Mr. Gulick claimed that Mr. and Mrs. Blosser had many inconsistencies in their testimony, and that jhe commonwealth’s case did not hold water.
Mr. Luke spoke once more. He said, “How were the Blossers able to describe this truck if Shawn Alan Hamrick and Jeremy Adam Clem were already home? They said they got home at 1 a.m.; the Blossers saw them at 2 a.m.. If you were going to plan an arson, you might think about changing your clothes to lessen the chance of being identified”.
After deliberating for about one and a half hours, and sending out one question for the judge “Is arson a felony or a misdemeanor?” the jury found Shawn Alan Hamrick quilty of arson, which is a felony. Upon hearing the verdict, Mr. Hamrick was visibly shaken, and his head nodded down toward his chest.
