The Board of Supervisors voted Monday to try to lease one bed in a juvenile detention facility to be built in Loudoun County. _In December County Adminis- 1 trator John McCarthy said Loudoun County intended to build a 15 bed facility but would expand to up to 21 beds if surrounding counties were interested.
The original proposal would have required other counties to put up half the cost of building the space and pay the per bed cost of operation for. seven years. After that the county would have no right to use the space. That would have worked out to about $23,000 per year.
The supervisors rejected that as too costly and and not offering a long enough assurance of space for juveniles and suggested that the term be extended to 20 years. Other counties negotiating with Loudoun County asked for the same Conditions.
'The Loudoun Board of Supervisors agreed to extend the agreement to 10 years with the possibility of negotiating for two two-year extension. That brings the cost down to not much over $20,000 per year.
Currently the county budgets $15,000 for juvenile detention. Last year, the county spent considerably less than that, but the year before the cost exceeded the budget.
