Kenbridge Construction Co. was the apparent low bidder when bids for construction of an addition at the elementary school were opened Tuesday at noon in the school board office.
The Kenbridge bid of $1,129,000 plus $45,000 for additions to the parking lot was slightly under what had been expected. It will leave the school system with a margin of funds for furnishing the addition and beginning the process of solving sewage problems at the school
The county borrowed $1.5 million from the Virginia School Boards Authority for the addition. Thirty thousand has been spent for half of the cost of land purchased. The county must spend the money for school purposes within one year of when the money became available in December or request an extension.
jThe school system has until August 1997 to replace the lagoon used to treat sewage at the elementary school with a system that removes amonia. A package treatment plant for the school may cost more than the uncommitted funds and leave the school system still needing a solution to sewage problems at the high school.
