Public comments are being solicated on the gypsy moth control program being planned for implementation in May 1994. An Environmental Assessment (EA) is being prepared for proposed management actions to be conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Services Cooperative Suppression Program.
Gypsy moth populations in Shen- ’ andoah National Park are expected to be at damaging levels, and management actions will be needed to control this alien species. Some of the Park’s visitor-use areas and portions of the Skyline Drive will be »treated with Diflubezuron.
Park Superintendent J.W. Wade states that “Populations of the gyspy moth have declined throughout the Park due to gypsy moth diseases which kill the caterpillars. Populations in other areas continue to build to defoliating levels and will need to be controlled.”
