The 69th running of the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase classic will be featured on a seven-race card expected to draw the nation’s top steeplechase horses and be broadcast on live national television from the beautiful Great Meadow race course on Saturday, May 9 at The Plains.

Purses this year will top $115,000 making it one of the richest steeplechase events in the country. The Virginia Gold Cup, a stakes race sponsored by BMW and a purse of $40,000, is the richest timber race in the world. This year will mark the second time in history that the first three winners of the Virginia Gold Cup will automatically qualify for the famed 157 year-old Grand National Steeplechase held the first Saturday in April at the Aintree Course in Liverpool, England.

More than 50,000 people will gather on the grassy hillsides of Great Meadow the first Saturday in May for what has become the region’s premier spring event. As in
