A jury of seven men and five women found Shawn Alan Hamrick, 21, of Marshall guilty of arson in a case heard in circuit court last Thursday.
The jupr fined Mr. Hamrick $2,500 but did not impose any jail time.
Mr. Hamrick was indicted on Nov. 8, 1993, along with Jeremy Adam Clem, 18, of Linden, for the arson incident. Mr. Clem’s trial was held on Jan. 10, and his case was dismissed.
Mr. Hamrick was convicted of setting on fire three hay bales belonging to Werner Krebser of Huntly. The hay bales were located on property belonging to Dr. Krebser along U.S. 522 in Huntly, near Route 662.
As the first witness called by Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, Dr. Krebser said he received a call from the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department at about 3 a.m. July 28 telling him that some of his hay bales were on fire. Dr. Krebser drove to the scene and used his backhoe to unroll the bales, so that the fire could be put out more easily.
Dr. Krebser testified that he has been making hay for over 20 years, and is very careful about making sure his hay is totally dry before baling it. If hay is not dry, spontaneous combustion can occur.
