the past, the Gold Cup is expected to sell out prior to race day; no tickets will be sold at the gates.

The da/s feature, the Virginia Gold Cup, is a timber race over a four-mile course of 23 post and rail fences. Also proposed on the card is an allowance timber race, an allowance hurdle race, a claiming timber race, a maiden hurldle race, a handicapped stakes race with a $25,000 purse and a maiden claiming hurdle race.

Gates will open at 10 a.m. and prerace entertainment will begin at 10:30 a.m. Festivities will includes a parachute jump by the all-women “Misty Blues,” a pigeon race, chariot race, Dixieland Band music, foxhound races and the U.S. Mounted Park Police Drill Team. Pony racing, a Virginia hunt country tradition, will begin around noon. Post time for the first steeplechase race is 1:30 p.m.

Proceeds form the Virginia Gold Cup races benefit the free yearround use of Great Meadow by community and nonprofit groups. The Warrenton Lions Club will raffle a BMW at the races with proceeds benefitting a number of charities, including area hearing and sight programs.
