Not all unpleasant reactions to food are the result of an allergy. “Allergy” has become the household word for any bad effects you get from something that doesn’t bother most people. Actually, an allergy is a very spetific body response involving the immune system.

Other adverse reactions to food my be intolerances-which the body, literally, can’t tolerate the food (can’t digest or metabolize it normally). There are also food sensitivities. This term is used to refer to both allergies and intolerances-and any other unusual reaction to food.

In some ways, it doesn’t much matter whether what you’ve got is a good allergy or intolerance or sensitivity. You’re in discomfort and the primary treatment, in any case, is to avoid the offending food. But in other ways-including the degree of health problem involved-the difference can matter.
