Jay Katzen (R-31st), who announced last week that he will abstain from voting on a $163 million aid package for the Walt Disney Co., is having second thoughts. 1 Del. Katzen on Tuesday said through his aide that he might reconsider his decision and vote on the Disney aid package. He announced Feb. 1 that he would not vote because of a conflict of interest.
„ Del. Katzen owns between $10,000 and $50,000 worth of stock in the Exxon Corp., whose subsidiary owns a major portion of the Haymarket property on which Disney has proposed building its 3,000acre theme park.
He said he would profit should the Disney project win legislative approval. '■ “We are looking to find a way that he could possibly vote on it without being in a conflict of interest,” Del. Katzen’s aide, Broc Johnson, said.
Following his decision last week, most lawmakers and state officials argued that Del. Katzen had acted properly. But he nevertheless be^me the object of some sharp criticism for his refusal to take a position on the Disney site in Prince William County and on the aid package, which includes using tax dollars to build an interchange on Interstate 66- and an access road on the park site. , Although Del. Katzen denied he yyas playing it safe by abstaining and refusing to state a position, most lawmakers and Capitol observers charged that he was avoiding making his first tough decision on the (Host contentious issue in the General Assembly this year. 1i\
