No speed records were set at the 16th running of the Fodderstack 10K road race Saturday, but the crowd was as enthusiastic as if they were.
A record 187 runners pre-registered. The total registered was 251, with 233 actually participating.
Paul Loebach was first overall with a time of 33:52, almost a minute and a half over Steve Pinard’s 1985 record of 32:26. Ken Wolters, last year’s winner in 33 minutes flat, was second at 34:01, and Eldon Mack ran third with a time of 34:16.
In the women’s competition Monica Grillo finished first in 39:13, compared to the record 36:46 set by Kim Belyea in 1984. Ms. Grillo was a repeat winner and bettered her time in last year’s victory of 36:46. Jeanne Grillo was second in 43:08 with Kimberly Kruse third in 43:16.
The coveted Eva Smith Memorial trophies, presented to the first man and woman who are Rappahannock residents, were won by high school students Jason Waters and Holly Gangel. They also won their 13-18 age divisions.
For Jason this was his third consecutive Eva Smith trophy. Each year his time improves. This year he ran in 36:45, eight seconds faster than last year’s 36:56. However, Frank Reynolds from the sidelines insisted that when he won several of these trophies in the 1980s, he ran in under 36 minutes.
For Holly Gangel, it was a first victory in her first attempt over the gueling course. Her time of45:48 did not equal Nina Stamer’s time last year of 43:41.
In the 13-18 category, Jason was followed by Mike Grimsley second in 36:57 and Mark Jenkins third in 38:05.
For the girls in the 13-18 category Sara Morency was second in 60:31 and Nanci Galle
