The girls’ softball team gained three more victories and suffered one defeat in the past week.
On Tuesday they bested Central at home 16 to 6. Coach Renee Leake reported that Marsha Freeman, Leah Marlett and Cari Kerr were the heavy hitters in the game. Marsha went four for four; Leah was four for five including a home run, and Cari was three for five.
“Amy Payne struck out four while allowing only four walks,” Coach Leake said. “She had a good game also, and Bonnie Jewell at first base had five put outs on her own.”
On Wednesday the team played Luray at home and won 25 to 1 in five innings. “Every member played and contributed to the win,” Coach Leake said. “Amy allowed only one hit. Shamita Fletcher came in and pitched two innings and gave up only two hits. We had 20 total hits. Everyone on the team got a hit in that game.”
On Friday the team traveled to Strasburg and lost 9 to 18. “Until the fourth inning, it was 3 to 4,” Coach Leake said. “We had five errors in one inning. Cari Kerr went four for four and scored four runs. Laura McNear was three for four, and those were really all the bright spots,” she added.
Monday the team met Central again in an away game and won 12 to 4. “It was an excellent hitting game for us, a much better defensive game than Friday,” Coach Leake said. “We had only three errors. Amy allowed only four hits and walked only four. Leah Marlett as the designated hitter went three for four. Deitrich Beaver was two for four, and Janet Hitt had a, triple that knocked in three runs.”
The team has a 7 and 5 overall record, 5 and 5 in the district and is tied for fourth in the district. Only
