I am writing to you as a member of the Washington Town Council, and newly elected chairperson of the Town of Washington Planning Commission. I have been involved in town government for almost eight years, and for most of that time, I have served alongside Ms. Louise van Dort of the Planning Commission and on various volunteer committees.
I know of no other person in this town who has been more active on behalf of everyone who lives here. As chairperson of the Planning Commission, she engineered the redrafting of every single town ordinance in the past four years. She single-handedly, and without remuneration, spent hours at her computer typing and retyping every draft and redraft of each ordinance. She made sure that every council member and every planning commissioner had copies of all necessary documents before our meetings, and made for each of us binders containing all the newly revised and adopted ordinances.
Bis. van Dort has been chairperson of the Town Celebrations Committee, which has been responsible for our Fourth of July and Colonial Christmas events. Not only did she oversee the planning of these festivities; she climbed up ladders and decorated the Town Hall for Christmas; she cut down the Christmas tree and trimmed it herself; she ordered and distributed the greens for town residents and businesses, and generally got everyone working together.
For the Fourth of July, she orders the fireworks, acts as a liaison between the WVFD, merchants, crafts people, and fundraising organizations, and she is also out at dawn roping off the parking lots, making signs, and any other job that needs to be done.
